A woman should continue to take a prenatal multivitamin until she stops breastfeeding.

3. What time of day should a woman take a prenatal multivitamin?
A prenatal multivitamin should ideally be taken with a meal to help the tablet disintegration, maximize nutrient absorption and minimize the potential for gastrointestinal upset among mothers sensitive to iron.


About Centrum Materna


1. Is Centrum Materna gluten-free?
Yes, Centrum Materna is a gluten-free product.

2. Does Centrum Materna contain peanut oil?
No, Centrum Materna DOES NOT contain peanut oil.

3. Does Centrum Materna contain lactose?
There is a negligible amount of lactose in Centrum Materna (less than 1mg). It is not a filler for the tablet, but is included as a raw material in vitamin C and beta-carotene. Also, it is not derived from milk.

People with lactose intolerance need to consume several grams of lactose to experience gastro-intestinal upset.

4. What is the carbohydrate content in Centrum Materna?
The carbohydrate content is negligible and should not be an issue for low carbohydrate weight management or for individuals with diabetes. There is no added sugar, but there may be traces in the raw materials.

5. I am having difficulty swallowing my Centrum Materna tablets. What can I do?
You can crush the tablet and then mix the powder in a drink. A pill crusher can be purchased from a local pharmacy.

Or you can cut the tablet in half along the bisect line. Try to cut the tablet evenly, as sharp ends may be difficult to swallow.



About Folic Acid


1. What is folic acid?
Folic acid is a B-vitamin essential for the healthy development of the fetus, brain and skull during the early weeks of pregnancy.

2. What is the difference between folic acid and folate?
Folate and folic acid are B-vitamins, however folate is the form which is naturally found in foods and folic acid is the synthetic compound used to fortify food and is used in prenatal multivitamins. Folic acid is a more active form of this B-vitamin than its natural counterpart, folate.

3. Why should I take folic acid before I get pregnant?
Spina bifida and other neural tube defects (NTDs) occur between the 3rd and 4th week of fetal development, a time when most women don't even know that they are pregnant. As 50% of all pregnancies are unplanned, all women of childbearing age should consider consuming folic acid every day in order to help prevents NTDs. Folic Acid helps reduce the risk of birth defects by more than 70% if taken before pregnancy.

4. What is the recommended levels of folic acid for pregnancy?
The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) pregnancy is 0.6 mg however, most prenatal vitamins will provide up to 1mg of folic acid.

5. Where can I get folic acid?
Folate can be found naturally in such foods as green leafy vegetables, red kidney beans, chicken liver and corn however it is difficult to get the entire amount from food. For example, you would have to consume 2 cups of spinach each day to meet the daily requirements for folate (folic acid). Taking a prenatal multivitamin such as Materna which has 1 mg of folic acid provides the insurance that you are getting the daily requirement.

6. What are Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) spina bifida and anencephaly?
Neural tube defects are birth defects that affect the brain (anencephaly) and/or spinal cord (spina bifida). NTDs occur when the tissues that form the brain and spinal cord, fail to develop properly. These defects occur in the first four weeks after conception - usually before a woman even knows she's pregnant.
