美国游学直播（十一）：为孩子选择合适的夏令营主题
开始我的主题之前，我得先说个小插曲：
去年我还在MS工作的时候，当义工接待过国内一个著名机构组织的夏令营的团，领队带孩子来参观MS，我给他们当翻译。那时了解到这个机构组织的夏令营，主要是带孩子参观一些当地的大公司，一些景点等等。
今年，我自己组团过来，国内的家长跟我说纽约的华人在纽约的街头看见国内来的游学团在购物广场啃汉堡，带队的老师却在商场血拼。我以为那是个别现象呢。但是，就在5分钟之前，我的西雅图朋友给我打电话，说昨天她在西雅图的购物中心，同样看到纽约街头一样的情景。她知道我这次组织了游学团，也知道我的形式，所以特意跟那些12-13岁的孩子聊了聊，组织机构居然就是我去年当义工接待的那个机构主办的。孩子们在购物中心已经等了近3个小时，但老师还没出现，他们也不敢走开。我真替这些家长心痛那昂贵的营费！感谢我的西雅图朋友对我这种形式的肯定和鼓励！
我说这个小插曲的另一个意思，是想告诉我的夏令营的家长们：虽然我第一次组织夏令营，难免有这样那样的不足，虽然孩子们在寄宿午餐可能吃不饱，但是你们千万个放心，周一到周五，孩子们踏踏实实在西雅图不同的夏令营体验另一种生活，我甚至因为不能脱身满足随同来的家长去购物，还闹了些小矛盾。周末我和西城也精心为他们组织有意义的活动。
言归正传，说说我是怎样为孩子们选择不同的夏令营主题吧（按年龄大小来说）。
John：16岁。他的夏令营报名表有很详细的每日的活动内容，上下午各两项。当时我和西城都认为他有能力和权力选择自己喜欢的活动项目，所以干脆把报名表发给他，自己选好了交给我们。上周BBQ的时候，我问他是否有要调整的，他说没有，对自己选择的各项都非常满意。
David：13岁。我根据他的年龄和从他妈妈那里了解的信息，第一周给他选择的电脑动画设计，视频制作，下面是节选其中一天的学习内容。
We started off the day with making a stop motion project representing ourselves. We used a program called Pivot to create a stop-motion animation and added unique backgrounds and sound effects.
Later that morning we spent more time developing our own video games. Campers learned how to create and animate their own characters to insert into their video games, added their own customized backgrounds and sound effects, and continued working on adding narration and story to their games.
The afternoon began by spending more time working on video games. We tried out each others games and got advice on what elements we should add to keep making our games better. Afterwards we began the brainstorming process for our next stop-motion project, a film featuring Lego characters! Ask your camper how their storyboard turned out.
第二周给他选的是科学揭密，下面是节选其中一天的学习内容。
Today we dove into our myths right away. First we tested the myth that Pop Rocks and soda make your stomach explode! Our experiment BUSTED that myth, but we ultimately agreed that it was still plausible. Ask your campers what variables would cause this.
In the afternoon, we tested the myth that it is impossible to walk in a straight line while blindfolded. In this experiment, we learned about “
13岁的男孩子，好奇心和求知欲都很强，加上他的英语水平比较高，自然会很感兴趣。所以David都非常喜欢！
Jesse，Carl和Jerry：9-10岁。他们还属于贪玩型，知识面，尤其是英语知识面还不够，所以第一周选择的科学主题的玩乐型（Splash Science ），第二周是跟David一样的“科学揭秘”。
Today we learned why certain things float and how density and buoyancy are important in considering how to float things as large as ships. Campers first tried to make foil “boats” that could carry heavy loads without sinking. Ask your camper what design worked best and why!
Next, we learned about Newton’s third law of motion, built balloon powered boats, and observed that every action has an equal and opposite reaction! Ask your camper how well their balloon powered boat did in the race, and why it did or didn't accelerate swiftly.
In the afternoon we of course got outside to get a little wet with some games and our homemade water guns.
Tomorrow we will be launching off our rockets, as well as conducting a water balloon drop experiments!
Amy，Emma，Sunny: 7-8岁。三个女孩子，第一周选的艺术类（Smartest Artist），不过三个人的感受很不一样，一个说不喜欢，一个说还可以，另外一个说喜欢。
第二周给他们选的是科学类的，关于自然灾害的，比如龙卷风的行程等等。
What a whirlwind of a day we have had at camp today! We began our morning by learning about tornadoes! Then, we talked about what wind is, where it is formed, and how we know it is present on our planet by watching the movement of bubbles. The campers were introduced to the extreme wind forces that tornados carry; ask your camper which country has the most tornados. Each camper then made their very own tornado tube. Ask your camper to show you how the tornado tubes work, and what ingredients they used.
This afternoon, the camp began to understand what the “eye of the storm” means and how this works within a hurricane. Next we built hurricane-proof houses (models) and will test them Wednesday morning against the wind force of a leaf blower.
说老实话，这三个小女孩也是一台戏，不像男孩子那么思想简单。我还不太摸得准她们对选择的夏令营到底感觉如何，如果不喜欢，是语言问题，还是其他原因？回头我再仔细了解。
经过前面两周的适应，磨合，最后一周的安排，我当时的想法是需要巩固或实践一下了，所以，John最后一周去社会实践，学以致用，其他孩子最后一周是半天正儿八经上课（英语和数学），半天夏令营。我下周再详细介绍。
现在看来，虽然不能量身定制，但是大部分孩子的选择还都对他们的胃口。
