"Bush, Chirac and Schroeder Act Friendly"
June 2, 2003, 5:03 AM EDT
EVIAN, France -- Despite bitter differences over Iraq, President Bush, French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder chatted amiably Monday before discussions at the annual summit of industrialized democracies.
The leaders gathered informally outside on the terrace of a luxury hotel overlooking Lake Geneva.
Bush, Chirac and Schroeder talked for a couple minutes in what appeared to be light conversation. It was a casual setting where summit leaders mixed and mingled, going from group to group. Bush and Schroeder chatted together, and the chancellor gave a loud laugh that could be heard 50 yards away.
As the second day of talks opened, Bush had a positive report on the summit. "Good, real good. Had a great meeting," he told reporters. He declined to take questions about his trip to the Middle East later in the day.
Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien said, "People are smiling. Schroeder is happy. (Italian Prime Minister Silvio) Berlusconi is celebrating his national day." Italy celebrates the holiday June 2.
There has been a heavy focus on the personal dynamics of the summit because of the Iraq war tensions among allies. In particular, Bush was angered by French and German opposition to the U.S. drive to depose Saddam Hussein.
At the pre-summit gathering, Schroeder came out to the terrace talking on his mobile telephone, and then passed it to Chirac who continued the conversation. It was not known to whom they were talking.
Bush spent several minutes talking with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Schroeder and Koizumi also talked among themselves, and British Prime Minister Tony Blair looked relaxed as he removed his suit jacket.
Bush and Chirac were having a one-one-one meeting later Monday morning -- what the White House called a "courtesy call" with the summit host.
