Bicyclist Dies in Smithtown Accident

June 9, 2003, 7:33 PM EDT
A Coram man who was riding his bicycle Sunday night in Smithtown was run over and killed by a motorist who fled the scene, police said.
After striking Glenn Kelly, 40, from behind, Pat Esposito, 81, pulled over and removed Kelly's mangled bicycle from underneath his 1977 Ford Thunderbird, then sped away, police said.
Esposito, of Smithtown, turned himself in to Suffolk police later that night and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a felony, Fourth Squad Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky said.
The accident occurred at about 8:45 p.m. on Route 25 near Caleb Smith State Park, Pelkofsky said. Kelly, who had recently moved back to Long Island from Virginia, was pedaling west on the right side of the four-lane road, riding with traffic. Police were unable to locate any relatives here and were unsure Monday why he would have been riding so far from home, Pelkofsky said. Kelly's relatives could not be reached for comment.
Esposito, who lives at 21 Grandview Lane, was alone in his car, heading west in the right lane, when he struck Kelly, Pelkofsky said.
Kelly was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear and suffered multiple injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Pelkofsky said.
Esposito's Thunderbird was impounded by police for forensic examination and a safety check.
When Esposito turned himself into Fourth Squad detectives in Hauppauge he was accompanied by his attorney, and told detectives only that he struck a bicycle and made no mention of the rider, Pelkofsky said. He refused, however, to provide police with a statement, or take a blood-alcohol test. Neither Esposito nor his relatives could be reached Monday. His attorney did not return calls for comment.
Esposito was arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip Monday. District Court judge John Kelly set Esposito's bail at $5,000 bail or $10,000 bond. Esposito's next court date is June 13.
