Denmark toasts royal engagement
COPENHAGEN, Denmark -- Crown Prince Frederik, the heir to Denmark's throne, is to marry Australian Mary Donaldson after receiving government approval.
It has not been announced when and where the wedding will take place, but Copenhagen was celebrating Wednesday.
The couple were greeting thousands of well wishers at Christian IX palace. City officials distributed thousands of paper Danish and Australian flags and serving free coffee and cake.
Government approval paves the way for Donaldson to be the first Australian member of a European royal family.
The 35-year-old prince met Donaldson, 31, who worked in advertising and is not from royal blood, at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen told parliament Donaldson would stand by the prince "in a beautiful and dignified way but also actively take part in his life and duties," The Associated Press reported.
"It is the government's wish that (their) marriage will be happy and harmonious."
Frederik's mother, Queen Margrethe, has given her blessing to the marriage but will not give up the throne.
The royal family listened to Rasmussen's speech at parliament. Donaldson was absent because she is not yet part of the family.
Donaldson, who will become Crown Princess Mary when she is married, moved to Copenhagen in 2002.
