[该网址不再展示]

Mr. partners,

I’m a former pwcer (abas), today, pls give me some time to read through this mail, thanks.

Several weeks ago, one female colleague committed suicide, I was terribly surprised at this news,

I think every others, either still in the firm or already out of it, felt surprised, too. I’m

not sure the exact reason of her action, maybe like someone said it was due to her family problem

and super depression, maybe, but I really think it’s also somewhat related to the firm and the

working. Working in accounting firm, esp the big 4, u must face with high pressure that common

people could not imagine. I’m not sure whether you know how our auditors live everyday, if you

don’t know, pls let me tell you.

Being an auditor, u have to learn to give up many things, ur hobbies, ur spare time, ur friends,

and even urself, almost all ur time belongs to work and the firm. In peak season, everyone works

overtime almost everyday, the standard working hours is 40 per week, but it’s quite common for

an auditor to work over 100 hours in just one week. For myself, I had many times to work for a

whole month without having rest for one day, and in the month, I even never saw the sun as I

worked from morning to midnight or even the next dawn. And I believe everyone had the same

experiences like me. and now, there is even no difference between“peak season” and “slack

season”, everyday is occupied. i heard many staff’s booking had already extended to oct., but

after oct. it is peak season again, so for those poor guys, when to rest?

We are human beings, we are not feelingless machines, even machines have time to be maintained,

but who ever cared about us? Who ever cared about when we could have dinner, who ever cared about

when we could go to bed, who ever cared about how many hours we could fall asleep, who ever cared

about our bitterness and who ever cared about our tears?!

Do you know how depressed and even desperate the auditors are? Do you know how many people have

ever cried over the unbearable pressure --- both physical and psychological.? Do you know how

many people have cursed the firm as feeling being treated inhumanly? Do you know how many have

fallen ill as being tortured by the work? Do you know how many sleepless nights they have had in

the past years? Do you know that someone suddenly cried at the table in midnight without any

notice? Do you know that some others rushed into the washroom to cry loudly there? We have no

time for rest, and we even have no time to adjust our mood. We have no way to let out our

pressure and bitterness, maybe only by tears, but in most time, we even have no time to cry.

For the first 5 years staff, seniors, esp sa3, is the poorest one. They began to take much more

responsibility when they in-charge a team, they worked longer and longer, but no compensation for

their ot time, and in peak season, it’s quite easy for a junior staff to earn more than a

senior. Every senior has the same concern that for what that the seniors were not paid for ot

time? It’s not consistent with the labor law, but it had set up as a rule in the firm. Maybe you

will mention the bonus which is the so called “compensation” for seniors’ ot, but is it enough

and is it reasonable to pay for current year’s ot in the next fiscal year? It depends on the

firm’s performance and some other factors. Last year, the poor bonus made every staff, and even

managers I guess, so disappointed, but the only way they could do was to accept the fact as they

did not have the final say.

Frankly speaking, money is not that important if the firm makes staff feel warm and has the sense

of belongings. But how’s that in pwc? We just feel we are the money-making machines for the firm

and for you partners, the firm never cared about us, so why we have to work hard for it?

Fortunately, most staff in the firm are so responsible although they had so much complaint. For

most staff, pwc is their first working place after graduation, including me. I really hope it

could be our beloved home, I really hope everyone could love it and feel willing to work for it

for their whole life, but the firm made us heart-broken. I really hope you could take some time

to see the real life of your staff, to hear their voice, to care about them, and to treat them

like your relatives or your friends.

During my working in pwc, my parents had persuaded me many times to quit the job as they did not

want to always see my arriving home in midnight or even in the morning so exhaustedly, and I

think the parents of other staff have the same feeling. So do you know that the firm’s cruelty

not only hurt its staff but also the staff’s parents and other people who love them. Many of you

have your own child, if your child worked like that, what would you think about the firm and what

would you think about the management of that firm?

Someone said being an auditor, you have to get used to endless ot with no rest, you have to get

used to working without complaint, because that is the rule of this industry, esp. in the big 4.

But who, who has the right to set up such a rule? Why there is such a rule? It is not reasonable,

so why we have to obey it. I don’t know pwcers from other countries, but I do hear that their

life is much much more enjoyable than ours. Once in my a2 year, when I worked for a job’s ho,

there came some australian colleagues, they complained being off work late, but it was only 7p.m,

the time our Chinese staff started the 2nd round hard work in the same day. Why there is such

difference? Why Chinese staff should overtime work every day? I just know working with rest is a

person’s legal right, and working with payment is also a person’s legal right, what do you

think about that?

Do u remember last year’s SARS? During that special period, so many staff felt the inhumanity of

the firm. For “professional” purpose, eating in office was strictly forbidden, but where should

the staff to have lunch and supper? Without food, how could they work for long time? In that 2

more months, there was no many jobs to do, so most staff became idle, but they were still asked

to appear at office on time and sign off their name every morning. Besides that, the staff were

encouraged to take non-pay leave, but before that, it’s so hard to apply for a leave, sometimes

the staff was forced to cancel or delay their leave – it’s true, I myself had such experience.

So our understanding on that policy is that the firm just wanted to save money but not really

care about our health. One of my friends left pwc in late may last year, and he said to me that

he was completely disappointed with the firm when he saw how the firm treated its staff during

SARS period.

Do u know how some other big companies treat their staff during that period? I heard in many

other companies, the staff were given food every noon and the magt even purchased coaches to take

every staff home. In hp, everyone was given 50 masks, a thermometer, some Chinese herb, vitamin

tablets, and could choose to work at home; in shell, the management adjusted staff’s working

time to 10a.m—3p.m so as to avoid the rush hour…if you were the staff, what you would feel and

say?

Now, more and more staff choose to leave pwc, as I know, those entered the firm with me in the

same year had only half remained,(maybe less than half, during the past one month, 5 left; and as

I know, some will also leave soon), and for those one year later than me, 2/3 has left, but the 2

level is usually the key seniors or even sic for most jobs, the according result is that many a1

had to perform as sic, but due to the lack of experience and even lack of sufficient staff, there

must be more risk hidden which might affect the firm’s reputation which is so important to a

service firm like pwc, and even affect its life.

If the staff lost confidence in the firm, they would leave; if more and more experienced staff

left, the firm’s fame and attraction must be lowered accordingly; and if that’s so, those who

remained would lose confidence in the firm, and then leave… then there would form a vicious

circle. Do you want to see such things happen? But in fact, many many staff have already lose

confidence… many many staff are searching for a new job, and some even choose to resign without

a new job, because they could not bear any longer…

As having worked for pwc for some years, though i sometimes hated it, actually I really hope it

could be our home and I really hope everyone inside could deeply love it. The firm good, we good.

So pls do sth to make the staff feel the love of the firm, to make them feel they are cared

about, to make them feel they are not motherless children. You give them an apple, they will

repay you with a watermelon.

The soul of a service firm is fame, I guess; and the foundation of it is all the staff, I

believe.

The following is some of my suggestions, hope you may pay some attention to them. Reduce their

working time I was told that there had issued a policy saying that the ot time per month should

be below 40 hours, but the fact is that it’s impossible, or forgive my impoliteness, sheer

nonsense. it could just become an excuse to force staff to eat hours. You may say that the policy

has set up, that is the staff’s affair to eat hours. But do u thinks it’s reasonable to work

less hours with more tasks to do? The result must be that the staff work more time but they

charge less.

The basic way to reduce their working time is to involve more experienced staff in a team so that

they may share burden. But there is a problem right now, that is, there are no sufficient seniors

as too many have left. 10a2 not equal to 3 sa3. If I were sic of a team, I’d rather book one sa3

or 2 a1 instead of 5 a2, but now, even a1 becomes sic, so the only choice is 5 a2, but could they

share the sic’s work? However, as time goes by, the advantage will appear. One or 2 years later,

when those 5 a2 grow up to be 5 a1 or seniors, things would be much difference, and only under

such circumstance, the staff’s working hours could be reduced truly. Now, the firm recruit

hundreds of staff every year, but at the same time, how many have gone? The fact is that when 5

a2 become a1, only 2 or 3 remained; and to senior, maybe only one still in the firm, so nothing

changed.

Actually that is still related to what I’ve said before, to make your staff love its firm, to

make them feel they don’t want to leave the firm, to make them have the sense of belongings, so

firstly, pls try to love them and care about them.

Hear their voice always keep in touch with your staff and always try to understand their feelings

and always get ready to hear their voice. You may design a questionnaire and ask all the staff to

fill in and hang a box somewhere so that they could hand in the paper version anonymously. In

that way, you could know something true and fair. And I think you would be shocked at your staff

’s answer if you ask their true idea about the firm, about their work, about their career in

pwc, about you, and about the future of pwc and al so the industry.

OT with pay
OT with pay is a way to show your respect and concern to the staff, and it’s very very very

reasonable. ot without pay is instead a very very very unreason able thing.

Labor union
I think a good way to connect the magt and the staff is to found a labor union. I know coopers

once had it before, and it did have important function. Labor union is not only serving the

staff, actually it’s also a bridge between the magt and the staff, it could also help the magt

to set up some policies. All in all, all people’s aim is to make the firm prosperous.

Physical inspection
During my working years, there had only once physical inspection, but in later years, it

cancelled due to this and that reasons. Last year, 2 staff got cancer, among them, one died. If

there were physical inspection, it might be avoided. Besides them, there are so many fell ill…

just several days ago, one of my friends who was still in the firm took long-term sick leave. If

there were physical inspection, he might not need to leave so long time.offer the staff physical

inspection, better twice per year, show your concern to them.some other companies’ welfare for

the staff – for your reference just give you a simple example: now I’m working for a world-

renowned company, there is labor union, there is ot pay, there is physical inspection every year,

the housing fund is 10% of the salary, there usually some gifts, though maybe small and not

expensive, to the staff, the female staff took half-day leave on march 8th, (I know pwcer also

has, the female staff took half-day leave on march 8th, (I know pwcer also has, but who could

take the leave on the very day?) the female staff were given a box of gift for the women’s day

and also could subscribe to a journal for the whole year. …………….

All the above is not quite time-consuming or money-consuming, but it could warmpany.

Ok, i had said too much, and I’d like to stop here.

Finally, pls let me reaffirm my ideas.
Pls care about your staff, pls let them love the firm unfeignedly, then it will benefit not only

the staff, but also you and the firm, pls believe me…
