Lao Lang-A Balladeer with an Attitude

In Chinese, LAO means ELDER. He is indeed older than most of the active pop singers in China. Emerged from the College-ballad-movement in early value="90">90’s, Lao Lang quickly became the leading singer as well as an icon of that whole movement. Gifted with a warm voice, he sang the signature tune of that movement-The Girl Next to Me. This tune, as well as another well-known song titled School Brothers, became the songs of a generation. It is impossible to over-estimate the importance of that movement, because the Chinese modern pop music industry was largely the brainchild of this movement. Numerous record company presidents, record producers and song writers were either participants of this movement or first introduced to pop music by this movement. Helped by several of these talents, Lao Lang kept on making ballad-type records throughout the 90s and well into the new millennium. His 2002 Warner album Sunny Days sold extremely well. The title song became No. 1 single in the country and stayed there for several weeks.

But this is not the whole picture. LANG in Chinese means WOLF. That nickname gives away a little secret of Lao Lang. He actually started his music career in late 80s as a leading singer of a rock band. Rock N Roll, not ballad, is his personal favorite. This little twist made him not only a Chinese equivalent of Simon & Garfunkel, but also added a bit of Bob Dylan Flavor. While he is growing older, he found another way to satisfy his inner wolf: Travel. He has become a travel-fanatic, gone as far as Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. That trip was broadcasted by Chinese Central TV Station, which helped Chinese travel industry to sell Africa as a new frontier for Chinese people.

That’s Lao Lang, a matured singer with a voice as warm as an old piece of sweater, but a heart as wild as a wolf.
