George WehrfritzHong Kong Bureau Chief / Asian Economics Correspondent

George Wehrfritz is Newsweek's Hong Kong Bureau Chief/Asian Economics Correspondent. Since taking that position in August 2004 he has profiled India's largest conglomerate, assessed reform efforts at China's state-owned banks and examined the global textile industry as decades of trade quotas expired.

Following the Asian tsunami, he coordinated Newsweek's coverage of the disaster, spending a month in Indonesia's wave-ravaged province of Aceh. Prior to August 2004 he served for six years as Tokyo Bureau Chief, covering Japan's long recession and the rise of reformist Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi. He also followed events on the Korean Peninsula, including the breakthrough North-South summit in 2000, Pyongyang's ongoing efforts to develop nuclear weapons and the secret traffic in refugees out of North Korea. Wehrfritz's 2002 series on Japan's bad loan crisis won the Society for Publishers in Asia (SOPA) award for best business reporting. His 2001 cover story "Death by Conformity: Suicide and Japan's Mental Health Crisis" won a SAIS-Novartis Prize for Excellence in International Journalism from John Hopkins University.

As Beijing Bureau Chief from 1994-1998, Wehrfritz wrote about topics as diverse as China's economic rise, its nascent environmental movement, Beijing's punk rock scene, the roller-coaster U.S.-China relationship and rumblings of real political reform.输入需设置字体的文本
