A more serious problem is Japan’s sluggishness in the provision of broad-band
services such as Cable TV (CATV) lines and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). Because
broadband communication circuits have larger capacities and greater transmission
speeds, they are vital to the growth of Internet usage. In the US for example, the
use of CATV for Internet purposes has been available for many years and DSL is
also in wide use. Unfortunately, the Japanese government has concentrated on the
narrow-band Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), which has meant that it
has been left behind in this area as well.
